After delaying the most recent expansion so as not to compete with Cyberpunk 2077, Grinding Gear Games has announced that The Echoes of the Atlas expansion – which is its formal name – will be launching on PC on January 15th with a vastly expanded endgame. So, throughout 2021, it looks like Path of Exile fans will just have to be happy with the game's usual quarterly expansions. Originally, Grinding Gear Games hoped to have a beta for Path of Exile 2 up and running in late 2020, but obviously, the pandemic sidelined those plans as well.

The developer noted that 2021's release schedule will likely be turned on its head, but that's a necessity for the plan that the team wanted to enact. Grinding Gear Games is still looking to complete Path of Exile 3.13 in time for early or mid-December as well, and then move on to 3.14 with the spare time around since moving the game back. Though Path of Exile's release schedule is typically fairly tight, this is pretty sound reasoning that fans can likely forgive them for. "We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two games, so we have decided to step out of the way and delay the release of Path of Exile 3.13 until January," the developer's blog post reads. The developer didn't want to have to push fans to choose between making time to enjoy Path of Exile or Cyberpunk 2077. Path of Exile 2 (also known as POE2) is an upcoming 'new game' by Grinding Gear Games that shares the same game client as Path of Exile 1. Grinding Gear Games explained its decision to push the game back as a simple one for players. Not wanting to deal with that kind of frustration for its opening month, Grinding Gear Games announced the delay of Path of Exile 3.13 in an official post to the Path of Exile forums. Cyberpunk 2077's third delay meant the game would then have become competition for the free-to-play RPG's full release.
